COURSE DESCRIPTION
Develop your practice or a specific project with more focus and rigor, while also reflecting on the work through the practice of developing and honing an artist statement. This practice-based course is intended for artists who want to focus studio time on a specific project or body of work with access to one-on-one critiques with the instructor as well as peer discussions in the online studio. In order to support these discussions and how you connect with the information, the artist statement will develop and transform throughout the course. This will act as a manner in which to introduce the concept to the viewer, focusing on how the writing captures the essence and goals of the work while acting as a stand-in for the artist when not present. This course is ideal for artists of all media, looking for critical discourse related to current bodies of work, including work-in-progress. The goal of discussions with your instructor and peers will be to enhance conceptual thinking and examine technique, potentially exposing the artist to viewpoints not initially considered in their studio or process.

All welcome, regardless of the level of higher education or career stage. Students and individuals transitioning to new levels of art practice are highly encouraged and welcome.

New course sessions post weekly on Saturdays. Sessions meet in an online studio — a digital space that allows enrolled artists to come together and share their experiences. This course will be taught as an asynchronous/synchronous hybrid. The first session will be held asynchronously, as an initial digital studio visit between the instructor and each artist. Weeks two, five and eight, the final course session, will all be synchronous. Synchronous sessions will meet on Saturdays from 1-2.30pm (Eastern/US). These sessions will include opportunities for peer studio visits, critique, and continued feedback from the instructor.

COURSE OUTLINE
This course has its first session on Saturday June, 12 and each proceeding Saturday until July 31. The course will meet in two formats — 1) Asynchronous: Primary feedback will be provided to the group and each artist through the Online Studio in written or audio form. If necessary, a short private meeting can be arranged via Zoom or by phone. 2) Synchronous: meeting as a group to discuss the work of individual artists presented to the group. On synchronous days, sessions will be scheduled for those presenting in order to allow opportunity for each to present once during the course period and again at the final meeting date. There is no final “assessment” for the course but a final course meeting to present your work in its current state, resolved or not. All courses will meet via the designated Online Studio. The goal of the course is to encourage and support artists in their individual work practice, but also to better connect the artists to that work, via the practice of writing.

Each individual asynchronous session will be a time for artists to share their work with the group about the work they’re currently producing. This includes sharing work and conversations about practice, process, goals, and current state of progress. This will also be the sessions in which writing about your work via an artist statement you will be encouraged to develop to support and inform the work. The writing may also take the form of journaling, note-taking, or other writings that can be developed into a cohesive form throughout the length of the course.

Each synchronous meeting will allow artists to share their work with the group for live feedback and discourse. In order to allow flexibility each Saturday will not involve every artist presenting or meeting based on need and possibility of additional meetings is an option when necessary. Images and writing may be submitted outside of meeting dates in order to facilitate timely feedback and discussion about individual work and progress.

Courses will meet as framed below. Topics and points of focus for the session are variable based on student need and/or desired feedback.
