galleryELL Archive at studioELL

galleryELL was a transient, artist-run hybrid gallery founded by john ros in Brooklyn, New York. From 2008 to 2016, the project explored the intersections of art, civic engagement, and critical discourse — challenging conventional models of exhibition and access. Independent and self-funded, galleryELL existed beyond institutional limitations, supporting artists through exhibitions, writing, studio visits, and alternative programming that bridged digital and physical space.

Its mission centered on fostering transformation through art — encouraging everyday viewers to engage critically with contemporary culture and inspiring participation in service of the common good.

In December 2016, galleryELL concluded its public programming to focus on its sibling project, studioELL. The galleryELL website transitioned into an archive — preserving eight years of exhibitions, collaborations, and dialogues. In March 2025, galleryELL.com was officially shuttered. The archive now lives here in static form — a record of the work we did together.
